CENLAB IN EERSTE RIVER

Specialised testing for our clients

Central Laboratory (Cenlab) in Eerste River, Cape Town, is Much Asphalt’s flagship laboratory, meeting and exceeding all our testing requirements and working closely with our other plant laboratories around the country. Cenlab also supports Much Asphalt clients with specialised testing that might not be available elsewhere.

To ensure that imported bitumen is deemed fit for purpose, it undergoes a comprehensive verification process at Cenlab. This includes both empirical and performance-grade testing, supplemented with advanced chemical fingerprinting to verify binder integrity.

The bitumen is also utilised in the laboratory-scale manufacture of bitumen emulsions and polymer-modified binders which are subsequently subjected to rigorous characterisation and evaluation in strict accordance with current industry standards.

SANAS Accreditation

In 2006 Cenlab became the first asphalt testing laboratory in South Africa to achieve accreditation from the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS).

In 2022 Cenlab took a significant step further to become the only fully accredited bitumen and asphalt laboratory in South Africa.

All the specialised testing carried out at the laboratory, meeting global norms and standards, has been audited and accredited in a step that ensures the facility is 100 per cent covered by SANAS for all the relevant aggregate, binder and asphalt test methods. This includes Dynamic Modulus & Flow, Hamburg Wheel Tracker, Fatigue Life and Dynamic Creep, PG bitumen testing as well as rubber testing techniques encompassing Dynamic Viscosity, Flow, Compression Recovery, and Ball Penetration & Resilience.

Cenlab is audited by SANAS every 18 months to maintain this status. The accreditation covers the laboratory systems, including staff, equipment maintenance, calibrations, and verifications, as well as the test methods.

The SANAS accreditation also requires Cenlab’s involvement in both inter- and intra-laboratory comparative testing programmes for all its accredited test methods.
